RICHARD WILLIAMS
Unnamed Sources (2011)
Made in collaboration with artist Tiffany Eng for the 2011 Calgary Artcity Festival, based upon the themes of "City" and "Rebirth." The booklets were created in multiples and displayed across the city in both galleries and public spaces. Each book consists of a series of mixed media drawings and collages, in which one artist visually transformed the work of the other, and then handed off the final image to begin the process over. Passing back and forth between the collaborators, the images are spread out over a series of six books, which form a complete circle, in which the final image transforms into the first. The books were labelled as a series of seven, and disseminated separately, so that viewers would have to visit multiple locations to complete the collection. The so-called seventh book, (labelled as Book Six) did not exist, making it impossible to attain the entire series. The phantom edition, along with the title, speak to the unknowable nature of much of history, which is in a constant state of transformation and flux.
