About
RICHARD WILLIAMS
I am an interdisciplinary artist, currently based out of Toronto, where I'm attending OCAD University in the Interdisciplinary Masters of Art Media and Design program, working towards my MFA. My recent body of work, which has been made in preparation of my master’s thesis, is dedicated to interactions between humans and information-age technologies. Central to this is an exploration of the agencies possessed by such technology, and how that translates into agency on the part of the user. Transformation is another core theme, specifically the reciprocal growth and innovation which occurs between humans and technology, at both the individual and societal level. I will also be investigating how our current relationship with digital age technologies has and might potentially impact our relationship to the environment, which is itself at a pivotal moment of transformation. While my previous work was based upon sculpture and installation, my current practice deals instead with digital objects and active processes. Spam-bots and other malware, 3D printers and 3D capture technology, smartphones, social media apps and wireless networks are all examples of the media I am currently implementing. Interactive components are also often present, as well as a performative element. Engagement between the viewer and the technology is the driving force.
